Does bullying exist in adult life?
An Interview on Adult Bullying
Interviewer: Ahmet Baha Interviewee: Mutlu (A teacher)
How would you define bullying in your own words?
It's a behavior done to someone who doesn't want to face it.
Do you think bullying happens only among children, or can it be experienced among adults
too?
Yes, it totally can and does happen in the adults' world too.
What is the difference between children or teenagers bullying and adult bullying?
Hmm, maybe bullying among children can have innocence because of the lack of empathy.
But adults do it intentionally, aware of what they do.
What do you think is the reason behind adult bullying?
Because the people who do it have some inner problems like having no self-confidence, or
they're trying to satisfy their ego. Or they try to cover their deficiencies. This could go back as
far as their childhood traumas which they experienced bullying.
How do you think adult victims of bullying usually react? Do they speak up or stay quiet?
Unfortunately, some don't defend themselves because they don't want to be involved in
troublesome situations, while some get offensive and try to bully back.
Could you provide an example scenario of adult bullying?
Imagine this: your colleague asks about things like the university you graduated from, your
income, your origins, your age, etc., and uses this information to try and prove they're
superior and humiliate you.
What do you think should be done to stop bullying?
I think when people improve intellectually, bullying vanishes. What we personally can do is to
react instantly without being rude as soon as we encounter bullying. And encourage people
to speak up. Also, since personalities develop at young ages, nursery and primary school
students should be educated on empathy so that they don't bully anyone in their lifespan.
Conclusion
This interview highlights that bullying isn't just a problem among children, it's very much
present in adult life too, often taking more subtle and personal forms. But with awareness,
we can create healthier, more respectful environments.
